yet another blog title that had you thinking…

Yesterday I spent a couple of hours cleaning out my son’s room. He’s three-and-a-half, still within the acceptable age range of allowing mommy to do his cleaning for him. He did help, however, so don’t start hanging that label on me that is reserved for mothers who baby their sons into adulthood. Those women are gross.

Anyhoo, I started by thinking I’d spend thirty minutes or so, needed to just get his floor to a place where I could vacuum and put clean sheets on his bed… standard stuff. But then I decided it was also a good time to get some yard sale cleaning done. I’ve volunteered to host the 2nd annual sale my mom and sister and I have, and I figured there were probably a few things in his room that he doesn’t play with or that he’s just too old for now.

I was right.

Two hours later (or more, I didn’t keep track), I had several laundry baskets and one other basket and a plastic shopping bag FULL of toys! Holy CRAP! He’s only three for criminy’s sake – how’d he acquare all this STUFF!!!???  I think when I was three I probably had three toys to call my own. There was the rocking horse my grandpa made me, a doll or two, I’m sure some crayons… that’s all I can think of. Oh, and a Fisher Price dollhouse came into play somewhere… not sure when, though. I’m sure my mom will comment and disagree, but she’s prone to exaggeration, don’t pay any attention…

Yeah, it’s crazy. I can’t believe all the stuff. Anyone that has a baby/toddler – you might want to browse the selection when we have our sale. I’ll keep you posted.

  1. Well, at least he hasn’t started collecting trash yet. For some reason, my O/C daughter loved tags from clothing and junk mail. She always went to her dad’s for Thanksgiving, which gave me several days to excavate her room. I’d end up with several trash bags full of flyers she’d dug out of the wastebasket, clothing tags, old grocery receipts, that paper they stuff in the toes of shoes for shipping…that kind of stuff. I was so glad I never found anything alive under her bed.

  2. At least you’re relatively on top of things. When my chillun was 7 we took all of the toys she didn’t want and put them in the living room, then invited all the neighborhood chilluns to come in and get what they wanted. That was three years ago. Now we have two rooms full of toys. When is your garage sale?

  3. Sometime in May, probably. And if it will get you up here to visit Billy Joe, feel free to load up the automobile with girl toys and run up the hill to join us!

  4. I don’t remember who it was I was talking to the other night who was installing a projection tv system in the same room that they currently have installed a bad-ass wide screen high-def tv system. Now who was that…
Wilson and Elliot each got a piece of aluminum foil on their first birthdays, and then they each got a stick on their fourth birthdays. By the time they turned four, the foil was boring so the stick was there to liven things up. Now that Wilson is nine, I’ve been thinking of other toys he might like. Most kids in his school have more toys than his foil/stick. Some of them have “Bratz” dolls, some of them have “transformer” robot figurines, some have sports equipment. Mine seem to be doing fine with the foil and stick, so I don’t know. (Oh you should see the palm tree that Elliot fashioned last month…)

  5. no, no, no… the big screen is in the “den”, the screen and projector are in the room that formerly was the “formal dining room”. Silly. Obviously you haven’t visited often enough.

Thanks for the tip on the gifts – I owe Wilson a package of popsicle sticks and a roll of foil for his birthday.

  6. We’re so with you on the toy overload! And we don’t actually get that many for her ourwselves. It’s the birthday and Christmas presents that do it to us. Luckily, this year for her birthday we found a locally owned toy store that allows you to create a registry. We were at least able to channel the toyflood in a creative, learning direction instead of piles of worthless crap emblazoned with Dora (HATE her! or Disney Princess (HATE them even more!) or any of the characters from the latest Disney Pixar film…
