My family is amused by my crush on Johnny Depp. In fact, they flat-out indulge me. For Christmas, my husband gave me an autographed 8×10 and my daughter bought me a Pirates of the Carribbean II poster featuring my favorite expatriate.

Johnny embodies the typical “unattainable bad boy” persona that so many fantasy men do. He’s a rebel, refusing to play the Hollywood game; He looks fantastic in whatever he happens to pick up at the thrift store and even makes gold teeth and unbathed look good; He’s funny AND talented. And we just can’t put our finger on the real J.D… which makes him infinitely more desirable.

My mom had a crush when she was over 30. Several in fact… but the first one I remember was Harrison Ford after we saw Star Wars for the first time. I was 12, so of course Mark Hamill was the highlight of the film for me. I was amazed that my mom thought that smart-ass, scruffy-looking Han Solo was the superior crush material of the two. I was pretty shocked to know she was capable of crushes at all, frankly; but then to have such horrible taste… it was embarrassing.

Too bad we didn’t think to give my mom a poster for Christmas. Now, I just have to figure out where to hang mine.

  1. I suppose that women who have absolutely no interest in jerk-wad “bad boys” (with the implied abusiveness conveniently swept under the rug) are considered somehow inferior? That is a limitless source of amusement for me.

  2. Well, I did SAY bad boy… but I certainly wasn’t implying any abusiveness. What I actually wrote was that the bad boy image J.D. exemplifies is one of a rebel movie star, avoiding the Hollywood bullshit and not paying a stylist or publicist to tell him how to look or where to be. Of course, his mug is on every kind of movie tie-in item you can dream of for Pirates, so that’s all out the window now…

I also don’t think I see the lines you’re reading between that lead you to suppose that women who don’t care for the “jerk-wad ‘bad boy'”(abusive or not) are inferior. In any case, if my post amused you, it doesn’t matter if your amusement is misplaced – I’m still happy.

  3. And look where Harrison Ford is now… where is Mark Hamill??? Hmmmm??? Mom knew what was up :)
I watched Benny and June the other day and forgot how much I love that movie… all because of Johnny Depp. Le sigh.

  4. “Le Crush.” Ha ha ha ha. When I go back and watch stuff with former crushes, I’m amazed at how I missed the REAL man. Star Wars was the perfect example. Luke is so soggy white bread. And Hans Solo is so much more (like a hunk of crusty somekind of bread but the analogy starts to fall apart, doesn’t it).

  5. Well, for me at least, the appeal of Luke had more to do with his lovely blonde hair and sweet youthful face than his “manliness”. But, I was only 12… so it makes sense. Han appealed to women who’d actually had sex.
