I was told once that going back to college to finish a degree would be a “selfish” choice for me to make. So after I left that guy, I went back to college and completed a BA in English with an emphasis on creative writing. I was forty-one when I graduated, and had a new baby and a new husband to go with my new degree and student loan debt. It’s a modern American success story.

My professional writing experience includes contract work for commercial clients, news and event coverage for local journalism outlets, and social media management and content creation in the non-profit sector. With the advent of Covid-19 lockdown, I began focusing on my storytelling after several years of freelance work.

My personal writing is focused on short, flash and micro fiction and nonfiction. When I’m not writing, I create collage art, perform in a comedy improv group, dig in my garden and get on my bicycle as often as I can. 2023 has been a big year! My first book was published in April, and in August I’ll head back to campus to begin my MFA program at University of Arkansas. It’s true what I’ve been saying (and a lot of other people say): It’s NEVER TOO LATE. Shout out to George Eliot!

If you are a writer interested in being featured in my Our Time blog series about emerging writers over 40 (it’s languishing, but not dead!), I would love to hear from you! Reach out here, by email, or find me on Twitter or Bluesky @LaurieMMarshall.

Thanks for stopping by!
