In my mind, I was just going to be a nonfiction writer. I discovered "creative nonfiction", and was interested in doing more of that kind of writing, but had no desire whatsoever to write fiction. There are plenty of folks already out there doing that well, right? I've always been great at rationalizing my decisions to move away from the difficult thing, but also I did love the work I was doing.
